Embedded devices are meanwhile used in all areas of daily life. Application areas include among other things industrial control components (e.g. programmable logic controllers), computer networking equipment (routers and switches), office equipment (printers, scanners, copiers), entertainment electronics (set-top boxes) as well as automotive or aircraft construction industries.

They are often network-compatible components in which the same services are implemented that can also be found in server systems (HTTP(S), FTP, TELNET, SNMP etc.). Access to these standard services is usually secured via password protection.
